Cloud Computing for Nonprofits

Cloud computing is a hot topic in every industry. There are three different types of clouds, and the type you choose depends on your organization. So how do you know which to pick?

The first type of cloud is a private cloud. These are deployed for a single organization and are managed by an in-house team or a third-party host. Private clouds offer the highest amount of security and control, but are usually the most expensive option because it requires purchasing all of the software and infrastructure. Organizations that choose this type of cloud have critical applications and data, need to comply with strict regulations or are large enough to run a cloud data center on their own.

Another option is the public cloud. This is the cheapest type of cloud computing, because the services and infrastructure are provided over the Internet. Public cloud provide the greatest efficiency for sharing resources, however this also means they are the most vulnerable. Nonprofit organizations that choose this type of cloud computing collaborate on projects frequently, outsource part or all of their IT requirements and have less strict regulations.

The third type of cloud is the hybrid cloud. Hybrid clouds are customized to include benefits from both the public and private cloud. Depending on regulations, certain applications can be private while others remain public for an organization. Nonprofits that choose this options wants to use SaaS application but have security concerns or have some sensitive information while wanting to increase collaboration efficiency by using public cloud services.
