Understanding Deep Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) have been around for decades. Some of the earlier implementations of AI were disappointing, to say the least. In fact, they were so bad that the whole subject remained, for a long time, a preserve of enthusiasts and researchers. Fast forward to 2019 and AI is on everyone’s radar.

How We Got Here

It has been six decades since AI became a mainstream discussion. Back then, the scientists involved wanted to create a human-like computer. Technological advancements and better mathematical formulae have made it possible to make the AI dream a reality today.

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence in its simplest form involves introducing some form of intelligence into machines.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning is basically an instrument of artificial intelligence. It is the use of complex algorithms to teach machines (computers) to learn from available data in order to produce a certain behavior. The machine can then make decisions without human intervention if introduced to similar situations in the future.

What is Deep Learning?

Deep learning is a subset of ML (machine learning). It only takes the concept further by modeling computers around the human brain. This is done through the use of artificial neural networks (ANN). Deep learning is the true marvel of modern artificial intelligence as machines can now learn to behave like humans.

Machine Learning Gave Birth to Deep Learning

As mentioned before, deep learning is basically a subset of machine learning. Scientists and engineers have been trying to make a computer that mimics the human brain and behavior for years. Machine learning in its purest form involved feeding the computer structured information and teaching it how to use that information to make decisions.

As we got to understand the human brain even more, it became possible to let the computer take in unstructured data and continuously learn and improve its decisions with more layers of data. Deep learning takes the concept of intelligent machines a step further.

Why All the Excitement?

Well, deep learning is the stuff science fiction movies and dreams are made of. Deep learning is making it possible for some interesting real-world use cases. For instance, advances in natural language processing are a result of deep learning. We’ve already seen some truly inspiring applications in the industry, Google assistant being the most popular example.

Where Do We Go From Here?

We are in the early stages of the fourth industrial revolution and AI is touted as the driving force. There is endless data available to businesses today. AI is already disrupting most industries, causing us all to anticipate the next big breakthrough.
